A Nice Chess Fix

By admin

I had a friend once that had many chess sets. He never played with it though. I even doubted if he know how to play. It served as decoration for him; just a pick of furniture to the left of his fireplace. The darn thing was beautiful though.

The individual pieces were so elegant and stunning they stood out across the room. And the board! Oh that superb board was incredible! It was pure marble. Someone has meticulously inlayed chess pieces of black and white marble in a chessboard pattern. Oh how I wanted to play on that chess set…but no… it’s too expensive, my friend would say. So it just sat there to the left of the fireplace as decoration.

For all you chess lovers out there, I have a question to pose. What would be an appropriate age for a child to learn how to play chess? You can start a child as young as five depending upon his or her concentration level. Chess is a game that requires not just a chess board but concentration and strategic moves as opposed to luck as in many other games.

When looking (searching, seeking, shopping) for a chess set, keep in mind the age of the child and buy the most inexpensive one that you can find. Be aware that the inter net can also provide this popular game at no cost to you, so buying a chess set may not be necessary. Have fun with your child teaching it this game made for young and old alike.

I prefer playing on a marble chess set to the onyx ones that my parents would sometimes buy in Tijuana, MX. Those sets have pieces that for some reason tend to top over easier, whereas the wooden chess set pieces feel better in your hands and don’t tip as much.

It’s kind of strange that now in the age of the internet when we play more chess online that we go for longer periods without touching a real set, and as absence makes the hard grow fonder- especially when you have themed chess pieces – time spent away from wooden sets make the times that you play again with real thing more real and intense.
