Kenilworth Chess Club Calendar Update

The Kenilworth Chess Club’s Calendar for the remainder of 2009 has been updated on our site and at the KCC Minutes blog. Here are the highlights:

  • September 24 – SY FISH MEMORIAL RATED TOURNAMENT, Rounds 1 and 2. USCF-rated, G/30, 3-SS, EF: TBD.
  • October 1 – SY FISH MEMORIAL RATED TOURNAMENT, Rounds 3 and 4. USCF-rated, G/30, 3-SS, EF: TBD.
  • October 8 - Garden State Chess League Match — Karpovs vs. Korchnois
  • October 29 – Lecture by NM Scott Massey on “How to Improve” ($5 for anyone).? See also “To an Adult Chessplayer Who Wants to Improve” on our site.
  • November 5 – Kenilworth Quads #2 — 1st Round. USCF Rated, G/60, 3-RR, EF $10, Prizes $30 to 1st in each quad.
  • November 12 -Kenilworth Quads #2 — Round 2, G/60
  • November 19 - Kenilworth Quads, Round 3, G/60
  • November 26 – Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday.
  • December 10 – Annual Business Meeting.
  • December 17 – Annual Holiday Party
  • December 24 – Closed for Christmas Eve
  • December 31 — New Year’s Eve, club will be open only until 11:00 pm. Remember: no alcohol is allowed at the club.

World Women’s Team Championship in Ningbo

We promised you one more report from this Chinese tournament, with the lovely
photos of Ye Rongguang, who
apart from being China’s first GM, is an avid photographer. On the free day
Rongguang accompanied the players to the Ningbo Museum and Dongqian Lake, where
many posed willingly in front of the Song Dynasty statues. We also revisit the
controversy over the final round draw.

Mikhalchishin and the Arkhangelsk Defence

GM Adrian Mikhalchishin is a well-known chess trainer. He has assisted Romanishin, Beliavsky, Anatoly Karpov, the Polgars, the Polish, Dutch and Turkish national teams. He has captained a team with Karpov, Anand, Kramnik, Beliavsky, Short and Gelfand. He is also a leading expert on the Arkhangelsk Variation, and he provides five hours of video lessons on it on this new training DVD.

Gil and Marsel – Schoolmates and Champions

It’s been a good chess year for Israel, ranked third in the world behind Russia and Ukraine. The historic silver medal at the Dresden Olympiad was exhilarating, as were a string of individual victories in big events. Now two of the brightest young talents, Gil Popilski and Marsel Efroimski, have won the U16 boys’ and U14 girls’ European Championships. IM Yochanan Afek reports.
