Radomskyj – Stoyko, GSCL 2009
Black to play.

I have annotated the game NM Peter Radomskyj – FM Steve Stoyko, Garden State Chess League 2009 (you can also download the PGN) played Tuesday in the match between West Orange and the Kenilworth Karpovs. Kenilworth won 2.5-1.5 to keep their perfect record at 2-0. See Kenilworth Karpovs Squeeze Orange by Ian Mangion at the Kenilworth Kibitzer blog for details. The Karpovs’ first round match against the Kenilworth Korchnois is analyzed by John Moldovan at the GSCL Blog.

Tal R02: All games drawn – first win expected tomorrow

Friday, November 6th, 2009

We are not complaining – yet. Two or three of today’s games were quite exciting. But somehow we miss the rush of wins, and a table in which not everyone is in the lead. That will happen tomorrow. It must. Today it was Ponomariov and Ivanchuk who put some token pressure on Aronian and Svidler, but in the end the result was five draws. Round two report.

Five pieces lined up on the h-file…

Friday, November 6th, 2009

… we see in this position, where Black had just played …Ng6-f4, attacking White’s queen and rook. How would you assess the situation now?

A) The fork wins for Black;
B) White can get away with perpetual check;
C) He can actually give mate.

The solution is here,
but first ponder over it with a  larger version of the diagram.
